Copyediting and proofreading by Olivia Rollins
A careful eye to make your writing shine
Collaboration with an editor can be one of the most valuable and rewarding parts of the writing process. Every written work—whether it’s a novel, a nonfiction manuscript, an academic essay, or a marketing document—stands to benefit from the careful attention of a trained editor.
Drawing on my experience in small-press publishing and my training in Chicago style, I act as a mediator between writer and reader, working closely with authors to ensure that every word and every punctuation mark serves their vision and communicates that vision to their intended audience. I strive for transparency at every stage of the editing process, and I always manage to learn something from the writers I work with.
I specialize in copyediting and proofreading, and I work with independent authors as well as publishers and other businesses.
How I can help
Language and grammar
Every writer could use a second set of eyes to spot tricky grammatical issues and make sure each sentence reads as it should. I have completed multiple courses in copyediting and have also served as copy chief for a publishing house, which means I'm trained to catch mechanical errors and smooth out rough passages until they shine.
Style and consistency
Stylistic consistency is one of the most important things a copyeditor can provide. I’m highly trained in The Chicago Manual of Style, and I’m also familiar with AP and MLA. That said, I understand the importance of flexibility: the guidelines in a given style manual aren’t going to work for every manuscript, which is why I create an individualized style sheet for each project.
A fresh perspective
My work often goes beyond grammar, spelling, and punctuation: I also draw writers’ attention to problems with sensitivity and verisimilitude. By carefully considering the reader’s perspective, I can point out specific passages that might come across as unbelievable or unintentionally offensive. My top priority is to help writers communicate effectively with readers and keep their audience on board.
“Working with Olivia Rollins on my novel was a fantastic experience. She is an incredibly knowledgeable and skilled copyeditor—clearly a master of her craft. In addition, she provided a level of customer service (great communication, friendliness, and professionalism) that far exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend her services.”
—Alton Spencer, author of The Relaxists (2022)
“Olivia was a pleasure to work with! She has a keen eye for detail, while also addressing the broader picture. I appreciated her fresh perspective and sensitivity to how readers might receive certain elements in my story. Her edits and advice made me a better writer!”
